INSTITUTE DEPARTMENT

 

 The Institute of Foreign Affairs was established in 1993 in accordance with a Decree of the Prime Minister governing the establishment of the institutional structure of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Institute of Foreign Affairs acts as an academic institution responsible for international studies and research. It is thereby to contribute recommendations and alternatives on the formulation and implementation of foreign policy aimed at enhancing peace, friendship and cooperation in the region and the world.

At the same time, the Institute of Foreign Affairs undertakes to offer education and training in diplomacy, international relations, and foreign languages to Foreign Ministry officials and those from other government organizations.

The Institute of foreign Affairs is authorized to cooperate with the Asean Institute for Strategic and International Studies        

( ASEAN-ISIS ) and other academic exchanges of information, knowledge and research programs.

 

 

 Function

  1. Research:
    • To research and keep abreast of regional and world developments, and state to state relations impacting the Lao PDR.
    • To study and recommend foreign policy strategies in the broad context of current international relations.
    • To research and document the history of Laos' diplomatic relations.
    • To organize conferences and fora with both domestic and foreign experts, scholars and researchers.
    • To exchanges information, technical knowledge and research on foreign affairs and international relations with other institutions within the country and abroad.
    • To work closely with ASEAN Institute for Strategic and International Stuties ( ASEAN-ISIS ).

2. Education and Training:

    • To organize educational and training courses on diplomacy and international relations for foreign affairs and other sector government officials at both the central and provincial level.
    • To organize teaching and training in foreign languages.
    • To offer briefing and training to officials to be posted abroad.

 In conclusion, the Institute of Foreign Affairs strongly aspires to extend technical cooperative relations with other research institutes with a view to promoting peace, understanding, friendship and development co-operation in line with the Lao PDR's consistent foreign policy of peace, independence, friendship and co-operation.
