Closer coordination with INGOs urged

The government has urged its key bodies and international non-government organization (INGO) representatives to share ideas for better coordination, to fully benefit from INGO assistance.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith called for suggestions to improve methods of coordination at the first national conference on cooperation between the Lao government and INGOs, held in Vientiane from February 5-6, 2009.

“Your contribution of sincere ideas at this conference will be an important reference for us to improve coordination and the processes involved in considering and approving various cooperation projects,” he said.

“This is the first time key government bodies and INGO representatives have shared ideas and reviewed the achievements of INGO assistance,” Dr. Thongloun said.

He urged attendees to assume a strong sense of responsibility in considering any issues and to share positive ideas for more effective cooperation.

“I hope Your Excellencies will actively contribute ideas and propose methods to improve cooperation in carrying out INGO assistance projects,” he said.

The meeting also reviewed the achievements of INGO cooperation and assistance provided to Laos.

“This (the assistance) significantly contributes to implementing the guidance and policy of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party with the aim of bringing Laos out of poverty,”             Dr. Thongloun said.

“It also significantly contributes to implementing the Lao government's socio-economic development plan in each era.”

The Lao government acknowledges the important role of INGOs and continues to endeavour to improve coordination and facilitate the work of these organizations.

“This gives INGOs confidence in the Lao government's development policies and is reflected by an increase in the number of INGOs from three in 1975 to 161 at present. Many more have expressed their wish to assist in many fields,” he said.

Financial assistance from INGOs averages US$35 million a year. Projects cover areas including education, public health, environmental protection, community development, clearance of unexploded ordnance, and disaster relief.

At the conference, each INGOs showcased its products and achievements at exhibition booths.
