    Laos and Egypt Strengthen diplomatic relations

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith and his delegations held talks with their Egyptian counterparts during an official visit to the country from April 2-6, 2008.The visit of the Lao delegations led by             Dr. Thongloun was in response to an invitation from his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

The bilateral talks were held at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs where the two sides informed each other with regard to the progress of socio-economic development in their respective countries.

Both sides congratulated each other on the growing cooperation and relationship between the tow nations since diplomatic relations commenced in 1978.

The Lao delegations expressed their thanks to the government of Egypt for their assistance in providing agricultural training to the Lao technical staff each year, while the Egyptians thanks the Lao government for its support the Egyptian government in the international arena.

Both sides exchanged views on regional and international issues that they are interested in. They agreed to maintain the exchange visits between the high-ranking officials of both nations as well as maintaining cooperation, assistance and support between the two countries.

During the visit, the Lao delegations also attended the 2nd Asia-Middle East Dialogue, from April 5-6, 2008 held in Sharm El Sheikh.

The delegations also toured the historically important sites of Egyptian cultural heritage such as the Giza Pyramids and the National Museum.

Dr. Thongloun and his delegations then paid an official visit to Turkey from April 6-8, 2008, in response to an invitation from Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan. The visit was the first to Turkish by a high-ranking Lao delegations. At an official meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, the two sides confirmed their bilateral cooperation and assistance, as well as international support.

The visit achieved agreements on economic and trade cooperation between two countries, which will be fundamental to future collaborative agreements in other fields, particularly in the areas of investment promotion and protection, cultural cooperation and synchrinised custom and tax exemption. In addition, Turkey announced its intention to include Laos in its list of prioritized countries for foreign cooperation.

Dr. Thongloun also paid a courtesy visit to the President of Turkey, Dr. Abdullah Gul, when the two leaders agreed to further strengthen relations through the exchange of visits by high-ranking delegationss, as well as business operators.

Dr. Thongloun and his delegations continue to visit Switzerland from April 9-11 2008.
